needed out of hours cover

Our old dog went downhill on a Sunday evening and we needed someone who could see him fast. I'd compared two other emergency clinics and this one had the earliest slot with a vet who'd actually look at him properly. They were calm, honest about the costs and kept us updated through the night.

The best option we've found locally

Honestly this is the best vet we've used in the area, and I've tried three. The team remembers our Labrador's name and the nurse rang to check on him after his op. Fair prices for what you get.

first time using them and happy

Compared with the vet my mum uses, this was quicker to book online and the reminder text came through on time. The nurse was kind to my nervous rabbit. Didn't expect it to be so calm.

Their vet bloods were quick

Got bloods done for my old cat's thyroid check, and I know how these things usually drag on. The vet explained the results in plain English and sent them over promptly. Really clear.

Got my dog seen fast

Dog ate something he shouldn't have on a Friday night and I needed someone quick. Got him in within the hour and the vet was sound. Didn't have to explain myself twice either.

Needed someone for my old collie

My collie had been off his food for three days and I needed a vet who could see him without a long wait. I've used this place on and off for years and they got him in the same afternoon. Stayed with them every time since.

best of the ones we looked at

This is the one we'd pick again. We compared two other clinics and a private surgery before settling on them for our spaniel's hip X-ray and consult. The vet was careful and talked us through the options without pushing anything. Pricing was in line with the others and the reception staff were friendly on a busy morning.

Good care but a slow wait

Honestly it's a good service and the vet we saw was thorough about my spaniel's ear infection. The booking took a while to get through on the phone though, and I was told the follow up would be a week and it was closer to ten days. Still worth using.

slow reply and a long wait

I sent a message through the site asking about my whippet's repeat prescription and it took four days to get a reply, which was annoying as I was nearly out. When I finally got in the waiting room was packed and we sat there almost an hour. The treatment itself was fine and the price was reasonable, but I'd have expected quicker answers for a charity.

needed a referral for my lurcher

My lurcher had a limp that our usual vet couldn't pin down, so I needed a specialist referral and a second opinion. The paperwork came through quickly and the vet took the time to go through the X-rays with me. Clear diagnosis, clear plan.

Good for flea and worm top ups

Bought the monthly flea and worm treatment for my two dogs when I was running low. Came in a neat pack and the instructions were easy to follow. Only thing is I had to wait a few days for a pharmacy callback to confirm the dose.

Sorted my dog's tummy problem

Took my terrier in after weeks of sickness and the vet got it sorted with a change of food and some tablets. Appointment was on time and the follow up call came the next day. Solid.

Not as cheap as I expected

I'd assumed a charity would be the cheapest option, and compared with a supermarket pet clinic it did cost more for the same flea treatment. The care was fine and the nurse was kind. I just think the price could be clearer before you book.

booked my cat in online

Booked my cat in for her jabs on the site last week and it took about two minutes, which was miles better than ringing. Got a reminder by text the day before and the vet was really nice with her, she didn't even hiss. Would totally go back, she's a nightmare in the carrier so that's saying something.

Better than the high street option

Compared with going into the branch and queueing, booking my dog's appointment online was far more sensible and I didn't have to fret about the phone lines being busy. The lady who checked me in was patient and kind, and she explained the bill to me without making me feel silly for asking. Pleasant, unhurried and well run, which is more than I can say for some places I've used.

better than the other place

Much better than the last clinic we tried, where they rushed us out. Here the vet spent ages on my rabbit's teeth and didn't make me feel daft for asking.

First visit with our rescue cat

We took our rescue cat in for her jabs and a microchip check, and it was our first time using them. The woman on reception was lovely and gave us a proper leaflet about what happens next. The vet was calm with her, which was the main thing for me. Felt welcome from start to finish.

Flea treatment came round fast

Ordered the flea and worm top up for my two dogs through the site and it turned up at the right time. The reminder email meant I didn't run out, which is the main thing for me.

The shop next door is handy

The charity shop bit next door had a decent range of pet beds and toys, and I liked that the money goes to the animals. The till queue was long on the Saturday I went. Prices were fair for what they were.

About PDSA

PDSA is the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals, a UK charity that provides veterinary care to pets whose owners cannot afford private treatment. It runs a network of animal hospitals and pet treatment centres across the country, offering consultations, surgery, diagnostics, vaccinations and preventive care. Its work is delivered through its own veterinary teams, with care provided on a means-tested basis rather than through an online or retail channel.

The charity is funded largely through donations, legacies and fundraising, and it also runs pet health education and welfare programmes. Its customers are owners on low incomes and people receiving benefits who need reduced-cost treatment for their animals.
